The recent release of Spokes traffic counts has generated a number of comments on what is driving a recent change in the numbersc. I have posted a few charts which illustrate trends in both the count of bikes at the four locations, and bikes as a percentage of all vehicles.

The charts illustrate the long term trends which are useful to consider, and smoothed versions of the graphs remove the seasonal variation which is clear, with lower counts on average in November. The smoothing produces an average over two months , using each period and the previous period.
<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Tom Macintyre and I
presented at the Scottish Association of Geography Teachers Conference.<span style="font-family: "arial";">

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 12.0pt;">The presentation outlined a
range of official statistics available from Scottish Government and the results
from the 2011 Census in Scotland.

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 12.0pt;">We focused on the Scottish
results published through the Census Data Explorer, and used a number of case
studies to illustrate how the data can be used to answer specific questions,
making links where possible to curricular frameworks for Geography and Numeracy
Across Learning.

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 12.0pt;">The session ended with a discussion on potential use of Census data within Geography
National Qualifications.

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 12.0pt;">In the afternoon we took part in the 'Hot Spots' forum where groups of teachers took part in 10 minute discussion on a range of resources.
Boundaries - check

The boundaries of the islands were reviewed as part of the processing of producing output areas for 2011. There are unlikely to be many substantial differences in the island areas but worth checking by reviewing the outputs on the CDE. In the case of Barra they look very similar.

Population change

The usually resident population increased by 96 from 1078 in 2001 to 1174 in 2011.

This change was not spread evenly across age groups which is illustrated in the figure below.

In 2001, 22 per cent of the population was aged 0 to 15 years old.
This reduced to 20 per cent in 2011. A similar change is seen in the age
group 16 to 29 years old.

In 2001, 17 per cent of the
population was aged between 60 and 74 years old, with a further 6 per
cent aged 75 years and over. In 2011, these had increased to 20 percent
aged between 60 and 74 and 8 per cent aged 75 year and over.

In order to understand this change, it is necessary to look at statistics on migration and mortality statistics.

Some other key census 2011 stats on Barra/Barraigh

There are 549 occupied households , 117 unoccupied household spaces which are second or holiday home, and 18 unoccupied household spaces which are vacant

27 per cent of people aged 16 and over living in households are single

63 per cent of people aged 3 and over can speak Gaelic

51 per cent of people aged 3 and over speak Gaelic at home

68 per cent of people stated their religion as Catholic

53 per cent of people aged 16 to 74 are employed full-time or part-time

12 per cent of people aged 16 to 74 are self-employed

This course was organised following an enquiry from a team leader in the Quality & Development Service of Inverclyde CHCP. It was attended by people from a range of services in the council and a voluntary sector rep - who was the only one without meetings that day.

The course followed the usual format with an introduction to Census 2011 results, and then a demo of the Census Data Explorer. The participants had a range of experience using websites and so the practical gave them experiences to explore aspects of the website which were most relevant.

Material published here on NRS website.
http://www.scotlandscensus.gov.uk/events-and-workshops

The final section of the course covered accessing flow data and migration tables - a bit rushed so the following posts include some screen shots of what was covered. I will upload some additional slides covering this material.

Questions included
- sources of information available using datazones (2011)
- ongoing work to develop localities for community planning partnership
- ability to produce maps at local level using Census data

The aim of the workshop is to provide information to users on the methods for accessing the wealth of travel flow data which has been published from Scotland's Census. In addition, we will provide opportunities for users to discuss their requirements , and give advice on how these can be met. This will cover discussion on procedures for application, geographic areas, and classifications of characteristics used in Census and statistical disclosure control.
I visited the Fife Migrants Forum last week to discuss the Census 2011 statistics on migration. Fife Migrants Forum is a not-for- profit organisation that is run by a
committee and provides free help, advice, support, information and
referrals.

The following blog summarises the information on migrants from Census 2011 based on country of birth. This will form the basis of further discussion on how these statistics can be further refined to provide information on specific communities.

There are thirty small areas (2011 datazones) in Fife with over 10% of the population who were born outside the UK. The areas with the highest percentages of non-UK born are in St Andrew's. These are highlighted on a map and listed below.

Table QS801SC from the Census Data Explorer can be used to find more details of the countries of birth and how long the migrants have been in the UK.
The Detailed UK Migration Statistics are a release from the 2011 Census
providing information on migration into and within the UK. These tables
provide detailed information about migrants moving into, and out of, a
range of geographical areas from across the UK. More information about this release can be found at the following link
UK migration statistics.

The migration tables are available for a range of geographical areas in Scotland including council areas, electoral wards and intermediate zones.

The following statistics were derived for electoral wards in Edinburgh. Over 40% of the population of the City Centre electoral ward lived at a different address the year before the Census, and 22% had an address outwith the City of Edinburgh. The migration statistics also provide more details on the location of the previous address and the characteristics of the migrants.

City Centre ward - the year before the Census

3336 (14%) had an address in Edinburgh but not in the City Centre ward
2761 (11%) had an address outside Edinburgh but elsewhere in the UK
2553 (11%) had an address outside the UK

Characteristics of these migrant groups can be downloaded from the NOMIS system

Analysis of intermediate zones

These statistics are also produced for smaller areas called intermediate zones, with populations of around 3,500. An alternative way of displaying the statistics above is in a chart below. Given the large number of higher education students in Edinburgh , there are a number of small geographic areas with in excess of 40% people who had changed address in the year before the Census.

The areas of Currie West and Dalkeith Road have halls of residence which have a high number of students who move from outside Edinburgh. The areas of Marchmont and the Meadows also have high numbers of students, but they have relatively high rates of moves from within Edinburgh.
Yesterday I ran a session for Edinburgh University students studying for a postgraduate diploma in maths and geography, introducing them to Census Data explorer.

The following was an example which was suggested - relating to a student carrying out a project following a field trip to Ardnamurchan.

I used table LC1117SC (age by sex) to summarise the characteristics of the usual resident population in this area.

The following is the definition of Ardnamurchan included in the website Argyll Online

Ardnamurchan is the landmass stretching from Loch Linnhe in the east and
the Atlantic in the west and includes the lands of Morvern, Sunart,
Ardnamurchan and Moidart. The last of these has traditionally been in
Lochaber rather than Argyll so sadly is beyond the scope of Argyll
Online, although we include some useful background information on it.

The geographic area of Ardnamurchan can be estimated using a number of different geographic units including

- civil parishes of Ardnamurchan, Morvern and Ardgour

The migration flow data from Census 2011 for Scotland has been published through the NOMIS
website. There are now three tables which gives migration flows based on the address on year ago for Scottish residents.

MM01CUK_ALL - Origin and destination of migrants by age by sex
MM01CUK_NON_UK - Origin and destination of international migrants by age by sex
MMO2UK - Origin and destination of international migrants expanded country
http://www.nomisweb.co.uk/census/2011/origin_destination

Here is a snippet which looks at migrants from overseas into local authorities in Scotland, and identifies the top two countries.

A total of 61,100 residents in Scotland reported that they had an address one year ago which was outside the United Kingdom. This equated to 1.2% of the resident population.

The top five non-UK countries of previous residence who lived in Scotland in 2011 were China (4,400) USA (4,400) Poland (4,300), India (4,100) and Australia (3,100).

There were quite different patterns across the local authorities.

The local authority with the highest rate of migration from outside
the UK per head of population was Edinburgh City - in general the high
rates were in the area universities.

Areas where Poland and EU accession countries are the commonest international migrants
The Office for National Statistics published census tables (published on
25th July 2014) on travel to work flows as part of a release or UK
Origin Destination statistics (See footnote for more details)

These tables allow more detailed analysis of the way people travel to
work, in particular subdividing workers depending on where they are
resident. The following analysis was carried out for Glasgow City,
where workers were subdivided into those living in Glasgow and others
living outwith Glasgow in other parts of Scotland.

As expected there is a much percentage of workers travel into Glasgow
by car from surrounding areas, than travel from within Glasgow (59%
compared with 40%) . Similarly marked differences with those travelling
by train 24% compared with 9%. Bus travel is reported by 14% of workers travelling into Glasgow from outwith, compared with 24% of workers travelling from within the city.

Compared with 2001 , the main changes in the methods of transport used are

i) For those travelling from within Glasgow

3 percent point increase in travel by train
2 percent point decrease in travel by bus
2 percent point decrease in travel by car (driving)
2 percent point decrease in passenger in a car
1 percent point increase in travel by bike

3 percent point increase in travel by foot
Footnote: Origin Destination

Origin destination statistics are census tables which deal with
movement/ flow of people; either as migration (from their address one
year ago before the census) or travel to work or study (to their
workplace address). These flows can be cross-tabulated by other
variables of interest (for example, method of travel).

The first batch of this data is now available from NOMIS (published 25th July 2014), and cover the following for Scotland, down to local authority level:

WU01UK: Location of usual residence and place of work by sex

WU02UK: Location of usual residence and place of work by age

WU03UK: Location of usual residence and place of work by method of travel to work

The tables are published here Reference tables

Future releases will cover smaller areas below local authority.
