The recent release of Spokes traffic counts has generated a number of comments on what is driving a recent change in the numbersc. I have posted a few charts which illustrate trends in both the count of bikes at the four locations, and bikes as a percentage of all vehicles.
The charts illustrate the long term trends which are useful to consider, and smoothed versions of the graphs remove the seasonal variation which is clear, with lower counts on average in November. The smoothing produces an average over two months , using each period and the previous period.
Upward trends in counts in Forrest Road with some suggestion that the counts in Lothian Road are stabilising.
Forrest Road counts as a percentage of all vehicles are higher than Lothian Road in both cases.
